What is probate?

Probate is the legal process used to administer a person’s estate after death through the court system. During probate, the court may validate the deceased person’s Will, identify and value assets, pay valid debts and expenses, and distribute the remaining assets to the appropriate beneficiaries or heirs.

The probate process can vary depending on the circumstances of the estate and the type and value of the assets involved. With proper planning, some assets may be structured to pass outside of probate, potentially making the administration process simpler and more efficient for loved ones.
